On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, tourist arrivals reached 472.450 in June 2017 compared to 413.114 in June 2016, recording an increase of 14,4%. June 2017 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month.

For the period of January – June 2017 arrivals of tourists totaled 1.463.206 compared to 1.255.240 in the corresponding period of 2016, recording an increase of 16,6% and outnumbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first six months of the year.

Analysis of changes

Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom increased by 1,2% in June 2017 compared to June 2016 while an increase of 2,1% was recorded for tourists from Russia. Increases were also recorded from other important tourist markets, such as Israel (88,7%) and Sweden (25,4%). Contrary to that, a decrease of 27,5% in tourist arrivals from Ukraine was recorded. Percentage changes from one year to the next for the main countries of usual residence of tourists, are presented in Table 1. 

Main countries

The United Kingdom and Russia constitute the main sources of tourism for Cyprus for June 2017, with proportions of 31,9% and 27,5% respectively, while arrivals from Israel comprise 5,9% and from Sweden 4,5% of total arrivals.

Characteristics of tourists

For a percentage of 86,2% of tourists, the purpose of their trip in June 2017 was holidays, for 10,3% visit to friends and relatives and for 3,5% business.

Men comprise 44,2% of tourists and women 55,8%, whilst most of the tourists belonged to the age group of 20-44 years.
